Internship post 2: Friday, January 07 2011

9. What is your company's mission statement (and if they don't have one, write it!), and how does it impact their work?

"In support of the Zoological Society of San Diego's mission and vision, the Development and Membership Department is dedicated to developing, maintaining, and nurturing a constituency for fund raising, community relations and future giving. We aspire to the highest fund-raising ethics as we connect people to our organization in a way that is beneficial to both the individual and the Zoological Society."

I think this effects their work in the sense that they are very friendly with their visitors. They want to give them a pleasant experience and I think that also caries over to the times when they aren't around visitors and instead surrounded by employees. This carry-over makes them seem very friendly with one another and the employees don't seem to have a problem with each other. There are not petty conflicts between them, there seems to be zero irritability, and they seem to take great pride in everything they do even if it's something very simple.

I made a lot of assumptions on my first couple of days based on cliches. I made the assumption that most of the people that have desk jobs would be in this "man, just another day in the office", instead they were happy with what they did. It is really astounding how a sign with quote outside of a building can effect people's entire personalities. But I figure it sticks with them seeing as how they see it everyday when they walk in.
